Berlin Foodies guide

Berlin is not known by its gastronomy but still a challenge for foodies. Hope you enjoy the guide:

Currywurst

I know, if you are a foodie, then you are probably not into this kind of “fast food”, but once you are in Berlin you should try it at least once. Don’t expect too much tho, it is a normal german sausage with ketchup sauce and curry powder. You can get just the sausage for around 3,50€, which is perfect for on a budget, or if you want it with fries, it will be 7,50€. To be honest, I don’t see the value in paying 4€ more for fries when you can get fries elsewhere for 2.5€.

Kebap & Turkish food

As you probably have realized, Berlin has a lot of influences from Turkey. Many people came to this country after the II World War to help rebuild. In boroughs like Kreuzberg or Neukölln there are many different restaurants with a nice mix of several cultures. An example of this integration would be my latest discovery, an amazing tasting “curry-mango” sauce, simply delicious!

Curry & mango sauce, yummy 🙂

Soups

Berlin is suuuuper cold and best thing when you are cold is drinking hot beverages and eating soup. That’s most likely why soups in this country became so popular. It is easy to find them on lunch or dinner menus. There is a huge variety like cabbage, pumpkin, cucumber or potato. So if you are vegan or just enjoy healthy food, you are going to love this!

Meat, potatoes and salad

Most of the main dishes in Germany, much like their dutch neighbors, are based on meat (pork, beef or chicken), vegetables, like Sauerkraut or normal salad and their favorite kartoffel (potatoes) which they can do cooked, fried, roasted or mashed. So don’t get too scared if you go to a traditional German restaurant and they don’t have an English menu, which happened to us in Brandenburg an der Havel at Schweineschnäuzchen, you will probably enjoy whatever you end up ordering. Just remember to ask for an enormous beer with the meal.

Kartoffel salat

This is probably one of the most known and easy to make German dishes. It contains: boiled eggs, potatoes, sausages, parsley and many other things. We promise to put the recipe online soon 🙂

Beer

Germany is well know for it’s beer. Berliner Weisse beer is a very typical one you could try if you are a beer fan. It is basically a beer with syrup. I really loved the acidic and sweet taste, but if sweet is not your thing, you could always go for a Paulaner (wheat beer), a Pilsner, or a Schofferhofer (White beer). The posibilities with beer are limitless. I once read that a person could drink a different German beer each day for 15 years without repeating any!

Plum cake, apple strudel, apple cake, obsttorte (german fruit flan), rhubarb cake with streusel

Let’s be honest… when it comes to cakes, Germany has something to say. The number of amazing cake recipes are infinite. As you will realize while walking through Berlin, there are many cafeterias where you can get these treats. Therefore, this goes hand in hand with a huge culture for coffee lovers.

In any case, if you are traveling in a large group (as we were) and find difficult to choose a place to eat, remember an good burger is always a great option:
