Crabs! San Francisco Food guide

San Francisco is one of the trendiest cities in the world. It is full of tech companies and startups, the city is often the main location in movies, and top comedians perform their specials there. Although it is one of the priciest cities to live in the US, everyone should go at least once in their life to this amazing and multicultural city full of foodies.

Here are our tips on eating for you:

From the sea

Crab

When in San Francisco you have to try crab. You can find it cooked in many ways and is sure to be a great meal for you to try. We decided to go to the city of Sausalito, north of San Francisco, as we heard it was an awesome area full of nice restaurants. So there we ended up at the Salito’s Crab House & Prime Rib Restaurant which was absolutely fantastic and one of the best places I have ever been right on the water of Richardson Bay. There is where we met, me and the spicy crab enchiladas presented on the picture below, drowned in a tomato, black olive and mozzarella sauce. Prepare your wallet as it is pricey, but well worth it. All I can say is that it was SUPERB!!

Clam chowder

We were at Fisherman’s Wharf surrounded by restaurants and small shops offering “clam chowder”, this white, thick, seafood soup wasn’t exactly the delicatessen I was looking for but you know, we were there to try new stuff so we went for it and have to admit it was so good. Truth be told we asked for a small one without bread and we shared it. Maybe the trying was good but a whole big one for each of us would have been too much. We paid $4.25 for the small cup, which I think it was a bit expensive for the amount we got, but at least it was tasty.

Deep Fried Seafood

Bubba Gump restaurants are (almost)all over the place. You can find one in LA or as we did in SF. It is nice because you can take pics of yourself for your instagram by sitting on the Forest Gump bench and they have tons of seafood. If you like deep fried seafood you will probably love this place, but for me it wasn’t that great. The waitresses were not very nice, the service was slow, prices were high and I personally felt the food was a bit too greasy… So yeah, definitely make a jump there for the pics!

Chinese food

Do you know that fortune cookies were invented in San Francisco?? Well we are (obviously) not 100% sure but apparently it is! Where else then in the gate that links western with eastern cultures could be a better place? Indeed San Francisco has on of the largest % of Chinese Americans living in the US. Mostly lots of Chinese people moved to SF during the California Gold Rush. Therefore when in San Francisco don’t miss going to a Chinese restaurant and try some dim sum, rice dish, happy family, bittersweet pork, lemon chicken or noodles. If you have time check out the Fortune Cookie Factory.

Sushi & Poke

As we were saying SF has a close relationship with eastern cultures, and during a period of time it was actually the city with more Japanese people living outside Japan in the world. Unfortunately, during WWII Japanese people were forced to leave their houses and interned in prisons. Luckily after the war some of them decided to return to their houses with new Japanese immigrants. This is why you can still find really nice sushi in SF and more from the pacific islands Poke.

From California

In-an-out

How could you be in the US and not try a burger? And if you are in California you definitely have to try In-An-Out. Known for its fresh ingredients, I admit their burgers are not the best I’ve tried, but for the price, they are really good. You can get a burger from $3.15 dollars, which is actually pretty good if you are travelling on a budget and don’t want to spend lots of money, but still try something representative of the place.

Crafbeer

If you love beer as much as I do, then California is going to be your favourite place on earth. It’s really easy to get craft beer in almost all bars and restaurants with prizes around 5 or 6 dollars, but you are drinking craft beer and almost everywhere they have those prizes. What I can assure you is that generally all of them are pretty good. I normally prefer IPA rather that pilsner, so I tried more of those and they were delicious! Thumbs up for cali breweries!

Sweet me

Sweets

Baked goods, ice cream, donuts and basically every sweet you can imagine is in San Francisco for you to taste. A must try are the mini donuts you can get all different places. Most known are Trish’s mini donuts at Pier 39. We tried these and they were little bites of heaven. If you are more into ice cream, then definitely check out Milkbomb Ice Cream and try their Milkbomb Ice Cream Sandwich. This will be the highlight of any hot day.
